Some of my clients asked me to explain to them what an Indonesian Massage is, and I had very little knowledge of it until I trained in it a few years ago

My previous training began in 2017 with VCTC sports massage, but I am always up to learn new skills and look at different types of massage techniques. So, when the chance came to learn how to deliver traditional Indonesian massage with Total Therapy Training, I decided to enrol on the course.

    What is Indonesian Massage therapy?

Indonesian Massage is an Oriental type of massage method that uses both Chinese and Ayurvedic methods of healing. It can assist the body to heal, revitalise, calm and sooth your body.

Indonesian Massage therapy traces back at least 2000 years when it was used as the main source of medical care for people.

What are the benefits of having an Indonesian massage?

When considering having an Indonesian massage with Ann @ Chinley Massage, you can be assured that Ann will go through a thorough clinical consultation with you before any treatment. Ann will check with you that it is safe to perform this modality.

As with all holistic massage, there are many benefits. However, I came to realise that this is not just a muscular massage, as it follows the common Oriental belief that the body has energy flowing within it and it aims to release blocked energy channels or meridians.

Meridians carry energy throughout the body and are believed to be associated with the functioning of the body’s organs.

Under healthy conditions, meridians carry energy freely, while blocked meridians can create a feeling of imbalance and cause you to feel unwell.

How long will the massage last?

I tend to find that my clients will book a full hour’s massage, but ideally want a full body massage in that time.

My Indonesian massage sessions last for 2 hours. This is because I cover most areas of the body from head to toe and I do not believe that I can deliver a quality full body massage within an hour’s time slot.

So be prepared to relax, spend some quality time for yourself and let the holistic healing begin.

Will you make your self-care a priority this year?

What will an Indonesian massage feel like to receive?

My training, as with all Total Therapy Training, is based on delivering excellent underpinning knowledge, but also ensures that you receive hands on practical massage techniques as well. So now I can inform you that Indonesian massage can be STRONG. It’s almost like being run over by a bus, but slowly!

So, if you are into receiving a strong massage, this is one for you to consider having. Don’t worry though, I can adapt the strength of the massage to suit your tolerance levels.

Occasionally, clients come to see me, stating that they have experienced strong muscles spasms, that have lasted days, weeks and even in some cases, months. Did you know that having a regular maintenance massage can help to prevent these problems?

I will use warm coconut oil as a massage medium, which helps to release toxins, tension and eases muscles. It has anti-fungal properties, anti-microbial properties and has anti-inflammatory properties.

What to expect after an Indonesian Massage

Following your massage, you should expect to feel an improvement in your circulatory system as there will be an increase in oxygen, blood and your lymphatic system will be activated.

Your Indonesian Massage will not only help you to de-stress but will encourage the self-healing of your body, allowing it to recover much more quickly than normal.

Remember I can deliver a quality massage, but it is your body that will heal itself. You just need to allow this to happen.

any reasons not to have an Indonesian Massage?

There are some reasons why you shouldn’t have an Indonesian massage. If you are experiencing any of these health conditions, then an Indonesian massage will not be suitable for you:

    • Recent operation
    • Thrombosis or embolism
    • High or Low blood pressure
    • Recent head or neck injury
    • Epilepsy
    • Type 1 Diabetes
    • Varicose veins
    • Recent haemorrhage
    • Migraine
    • Digestive or Kidney disorder
    • Severe bruising
    • Skin infection
    • Circulatory disorder

    Post Treatment self-care

    • Keep the treated area warm and covered
    • Keep the area moving and stretch regularly
    • Drink plenty of water and avoid tea, coffee and drinks with caffein as well as alcohol
    • Eat nourishing foods to help your body heal and clean out toxins
    • Do not do heavy exercise after a treatment although some light exercise is beneficial
    • Try to get some sleep early, so the body can repair during the night – preferably before 11pm
    •

You may find that you urinate more or have bowel movements. Also, symptoms of a cold such as runny nose, sore throat or generally feeling under the weather can appear and these are normal signs of the body clearing toxins in the system and will usually go fairly quickly.
